On this day....

My daughter was born....

Yes, I was photographing a wedding the day my daughter was born and missed the birth. It's a long story, not for public post, but the birth was delayed that week and despite attempts, Jenna didn't want to put in an appearance to suit us and I had a commitment to Conor and Jacinta to do their wedding. This is a favourite photo of mine showing the laughter at the speeches and almost the moment Jenna was born. Now, over 6 years later she is no better at doing what we want...... but she's our daughter and that's what counts!

Why I like this.

I love images that aren't always obvious to the casual viewer, but to the people involved, they can be very memorable or emotional. This is an image taken during the speeches, when the bride is looking at her Dad as he speaks. Only the bride is in focus and we cannot see her Dad's face, but for me, this makes the image more powerful for the bride. She can remember this moment and it provokes the memory of what her Dad was saying.

Cultra Hillclimb 2017 in 100 photographs.....

I went to the weekend's hillclimb at the Cultra Manor run by the TSCC. Haven't been here in a while and I didn't want to do the long lens shots of every car going round a corner, so I spent the day wandering around behind the scenes. Some 11,185 steps and 100 photos later, this is my take on the event....click to go big....

Photobombing Policeman!

Your under arrest!

Your under arrest!

A few short years ago, some of those title words would have been used in a very different context. Today, it's the fun of a wedding day at Belfast City Hall when there is the weekly protest at the front gates. The Police rocked up at the back entrance to park before going to cover the protest but not before this particular officer photobombed my wedding shoot on Saturday. All in good fun and jest.......Patricia and her bridesmaids took it all in their stride, as Syd patiently waited inside.

Great day, lovely couple, a lot of fun....thanks guys!

More to follow.......

Passing on a tradition.

A849CCCE-8014-41C3-A033-61FF8A3E0278.JPG

When I were a lad we used get up and hour before we went to bed, we lived in a whole in the ground and ate coal for dinner, but try telling that to the kids these days and they wouldn't believe you!

OK, so Monty Python aside (who?), we used to use the flowers from a whin bush to colour our eggs at Easter as we boiled them, then roll them down a hill. I know, but times were simpler then.

Last week when I told my 5year old daughter about this, we had to go do it. As we have ton of whin bushes at the back of our house it was no problem, but we just don't get white eggs these days to make this as effective.....but we had a little fun anyway.

A Grooms Job...

...from now on!

IMG_0381.JPG

Something that comes up at most wedding fairs, when grooms are dragged along by their brides, usually to carry the mountain of flyers given out by us vendors. We usually end up discussing the fact that this photo can be taken at almost every wedding, when the groom falls in behind his bride to carry the dress.....his new position in life... ;-)

Thursday morning brought swings! Eva had made 3 swings for some of Jenna's dolls. Rarity, Rainbow Dash and Eva were on the swings, but Twilight Sparkle didn't have one.....that could only lead to trouble...

This is Eva the Elf. She arrived this morning direct from the North Pole to help Santa keep a check on Jenna and make sure she stays on the "Nice List".

Gooder than good...

She left Jenna a note to tell her to be "gooder than good", something Jenna told me the evening before, so Eva must have been listening early.....

She not really a morning child, but was up like a shot to find Eva this morning and get her treat from the Advent House. Let's hope she is gooder than good for the rest of 2016.

New Toy!

Fuji XT-2

Fuji XT-2

Who doesn't love new toys?! I certainly do and this one is a Fuji XT-2, their new latest flagship mirrorless camera. I've had it now for a few weeks and it's a really great little camera. Being mirrorless, it's much smaller than the Canon I normally use for weddings but none the less impressive in it's image quality and handling. Not gonna get all complicated, but with the addition of the little joystick on the back to move the focus point, it has become my go-to camera.

Joystick is great for my style of photography.

The camera is just the right size, not as bulky as a DSLR and not too small to feel awkward. It handles really well and the jpegs are great straight out of camera....bye bye RAW!

My Fuji lens lineup is expanding nicely so it should be capable of doing weddings. So far only used it for personal and family stuff and it has been a joy. Shooting jpegs means little to no post processing. The Fuji film simulation settings are great and I can set the bracket mode to shoot 3 film simulation version at a time. This give me a standard colour shot, an Acros B&W version and any other I choose.....fantastic. All the above photos were taken on its little brother, the XT-10 which I've had for well over a year. It's much smaller and very portable, not that the XT-2 is big, but is now gonna become the backup/2nd body for weddings. I've previously owned a number of "little" cameras including a Fuji XPro-1 a Sony A6000 and a Panasonic GX1 in the search for a smaller more portable camera, but that another story altogether......

The little house at the end of the garden is always good for a photo.

The trouble is, there is only one window in there. But if you look really closely, sometimes magic happens....
